QGIS Fundamentals: Aviation Track

This course provides the essential knowledge of using QGIS for civil aviation by augmenting and improving workflows either using QGIS exclusively or for processing data that can be used and visualized in other external tools.

You will learn how to extract, transform, and load (ETL) different types of data for aeronautical purposes including a simple print layout and simple web maps.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this course participants will have the general understanding to use QGIS for civil aviation purposes and will:

  • Understand what a Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is and how QGIS can be leveraged to improve civil aviation operations
  • Describe the main differences between vector data and raster data including the most commonly used formats
  •  Create products derived from aeronautical data including level curves, modified digital terrain models (DTM), vector features, etc.
  • Create a simple layout for presenting the data produced and analyzed.
  • Understand how web maps can be used to present aeronautical information and promote collaboration.

Pre-Requisites

  • General Aviation Knowledge
  • Basic Computer Skills
  • Access to a computer with QGIS minimum version 3.28.11 LTR but 3.32.3 is preferred[1]

[1] Some exercises may require upgraded QGIS versions, these exercises will be clearly marked if any. Long Term Release is preferred as IT departments are more likely to approve for use in production environments.

Technical Requirements

Online sessions was delivered via Zoom. Recording is provided in training platform

A minimum 1.8 Mbps is recommended to follow along the sessions at 720p HD video and 3 Mbps for 1080p HD video
